Croatian apple pie

This Mediterranean apple tray bake brings memories of Croatian holidays to life! The Mediterranean apple tray bake is reminiscent of Croatian holidays.

Ingredients

100 g sugar
370 g flour
180 g margarine
50 ml water
1 pack vanilla sugar
1 egg
Pinch of salt
1,2 kg apples
50 g sugar
Ground cinnamon
100 g raisins

Method

  • Step 1

Mix all of the dry ingredients into a smooth dough, then leave to rest in the fridge (approx. 30 minutes).
  • Step 2

Peel the apples and grate. Add the sugar, cinnamon and raisins and mix everything thoroughly.
  • Step 3

Roll out two-thirds of the dough. Lightly grease a square oven dish with oil and place the dough in the bottom.
  • Step 4

Gently press the apple mixture on top to cover the pastry. Roll out the remaining third of the dough in the shape of the dish and use it to cover the apple.
  • Step 5

Using a knife, gently score shapes into the dough, for example rectangles (approx. 5 x 4 cm). This will make the pie easier to cut once it’s baked.
  • Step 6

Set the oven to 180°C (fan) and bake for approx. 45 minutes. The surface should be golden brown. Leave the Croatian apple pie to cool and dust with icing sugar.

For me, any good meal should be followed by a sweet dessert. Because I always like the combination of apple and cinnamon, I can’t think of anything better for afters.
The apple pie takes me back to my childhood when I used to play football with my friends for hours on end, then come home to the delightful aroma of a fresh apple pie in the air. It was a sure fire way to top our energy levels back up.
