Traditional plum dumplings

Grandma’s recipes are the best! A delicious shell made out of potato dough with a juicy plum in the middle – plum dumplings are just incredibly tasty.

Ingredients

For the dough
400 g floury potatoes
20 g butter
100 g flour
1 egg
25 g semolina
salt
For the filling and topping
400 g plums or apricots
1 sugar cube per plum
3 tbsp butter
4 tbsp breadcrumbs ground
cinnamon
Icing sugar

Method

  • Step 1

    Cook the potatoes with their skins on until tender. Remove the skins and press through a strainer. While still warm, add the butter, flour, egg, semolina and salt and work into a smooth dough.
  • Step 2

    Roll out the dough and cut into squares.
  • Step 3

  • Step 4

    Put a plum on each piece of dough, wrap it around and shape into a ball using floured hands.
  • Step 5

    Immerse the dumplings in boiling salted water and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Step 6

    Melt the butter in a pan. Toast the breadcrumbs until light brown.
  • Step 7

    Drain the dumplings and turn over in the toasted breadcrumbs. Shake the pan so all of the dumplings are evenly coated with breadcrumbs.
    Dust with cinnamon and icing sugar before serving.

These plum dumplings are absolutely delicious and remind me of my childhood because my grandmother used to make them.
The dumplings are a flour-based dish from Austrian, south Tyrolean, Hungarian and central European cuisine.
